STEM DAYS OUT TRIP

The Its Unique Families February Half Term STEM Days Out Trips were designed to give children and young people — particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) — the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and maths in an inclusive, engaging and supportive way.
Funded by Brent Health Matters and Brent ICP, these trips combined education with enjoyment, ensuring families could access high-quality experiences without barriers.
What the Events Were About
The programme focused on creating SEND-friendly adventures that stimulated curiosity while maintaining sensory awareness and accessibility considerations. Each trip was carefully selected to provide hands-on learning, movement and exploration in environments that spark imagination.
The line-up included:
Math World
An immersive mathematical experience designed to make numbers interactive and exciting. Children explored problem-solving, logic and visual learning through playful exhibits. Sensory guidance was provided, including advice around ear defenders where needed.
Tenpin Bowling
A relaxed and social activity encouraging coordination, teamwork and confidence-building. This session promoted peer interaction in a fun, low-pressure setting.
Laser Tag @ The RAF
An action-based activity for older children that supported strategy, communication skills and physical movement. Structured play helped build confidence and cooperative thinking.
Science Museum & Wonderlab
A hands-on exploration of scientific discovery. Families experienced interactive experiments, engineering demonstrations and sensory-friendly exhibits designed to make STEM accessible and inspiring.
The Purpose Behind the Programme
These events were about more than just outings. They were created to:
Encourage STEM engagement among SEND children and young people
Provide inclusive social opportunities during school holidays
Reduce isolation for families
Build confidence through experiential learning
Offer structured environments with clear guidance and preparation
By highlighting sensory considerations and age guidance in advance, families could attend feeling informed and reassured.
The Impact
Children left feeling accomplished, excited and curious. Parents valued the opportunity to participate in experiences that felt safe, inclusive and thoughtfully organised. The shared learning moments strengthened parent-child bonds while also allowing families to connect with others on similar journeys.
The atmosphere across all trips was energetic, supportive and filled with discovery. Everyone had fun exploring, learning and creating new memories together.
